DAY 09

A picture of the person who has gotten you through the most

This might sound weird, because the person I chose is St. Jude Thaddeus, a Catholic saint. First of all, I'm not sure he'd quite qualify as a "person" as such ... he might be a myth or legend, for all we know. Second, I'm not Catholic!

But my father is, and in Sri Lanka I was sent to an all-girls Catholic school. Somewhere along the way we learned about the saints and praying to them for help, etc. And although we know very little about Jude the Apostle, we do know that he lived, and might even have been the brother of Jesus. Which means he wasn't Catholic either. ^_^

St. Jude is the patron saint of lost causes and worst-case scenarios. When I was experiencing just that, a couple of years ago, I prayed every day to St. Jude and I'm convinced he got me through them. I prayed to him when we were told we could never have children of our own, and I said the same prayer on behalf of my cousin in Sri Lanka, who had also been trying for many years to get pregnant. And, well ... we're now both mothers!

I've prayed to St. Jude throughout my life. I have seen him in my dreams. I consider him to be more or less my Jewish Zayde (grandfather), who guides me and always brings me through the hardest times of my life.

well... they are Jewish. There was no such thing as "catholic in Jesus' day. & in the culture, brother/ sister can mean cousins (same go for chinese)

True! I read that the relationship of St. Jude to Jesus is still unknown ... he may have been either a cousin or a brother.

Anusha- I'm not Catholic either, but I am touched by several saints, and St Jude is one of them. I had a boss who'd call on St. Anthony for loss items and I swear it worked for her. My brain calls them archetypes and I reconcile my attachment to them that way. I am burning my Virgen de Guadelupe candle this morning and sending thanks for the small miracles of life.

One thing I am quite grateful for are your always sweet comments on my blog. Thank you so much! You have such a warmth in spirit it can be felt even in the electronic type that presents itself on the internet. Thank you!

Aaaww thank you Bella! I am so very thankful for you too -- for your wonderful blog and amazing sense of style that helps me to feel connected to Sac, the arts, creativity! Sometimes I feel really isolated just being at home with only the baby for company, so I'm eternally grateful for online friends like you for making my life easier and more fun!
